Eergisteren hadden we het eerste menselijke stemgeluid dat vanaf Mars naar de aarde werd gezonden: een van tevoren opgenomen toespraak van NASA-baas Charles Bolden, welke door Marsrover Curiosity werd uitgezonden. En gisteren was er opnieuw een unicum: voor het eerst werd een muzieknummer vanaf Mars naar aarde gestuurd en opnieuw was de Curiosity het ‘radiostation’. En zoals je in de video hieronder kan horen klonk het alsof het uit Hilversum kwam! Het ging om het nummer Reach for the Stars (Mars Edition) dat door de rapper Will.i.am is opgenomen. Op de foto hierboven zie je hem samen met NASA wetenschapper Jim Garvin (Goddard Space Flight Center) bij een model van de Curiosity bij het Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Rechts staat space shuttle astronaut Leland Melvin. Reach for the Stars is het allereerste interplanetaire nummer geworden – vast niet het laatste. Voor de NASA is het een manier om ruimtevaart te promoten onder de jeugd en om educatieve doelen te versterken. Hieronder het nummer Reach for the Stars, zoals dat live door de Curiosity vanuit de Gale krater op Mars werd uitgezonden, terwijl ze bij het JPL-vluchtleidingscentrum én in een zaal vol studenten enthousiast toekijken.
