Hi Richard,
…
Don’t you think that (given a small margin of uncertainty as to exactly the nature of what we are doing), the LHC should be shut down by CERN on the strength of the statistical observation that on average the LHC will destroy a small number of stars and planets?
The 0. argument goes as follows:
– Suppose the universe is 1. a quantum computer that can 2. black out (program terminated) when certain anomalies (bugs) occur.
– Suppose that 3. within the frame of the laws of nature existing on earth 4. colliding protons from opposite directions is just such an anomaly.
– Then P(0.) = P(1.)*P(2.)*P(3.)*P(4.) is the chance the universe will be destroyed because of the LHC.
For example my estimate:
P(0.) = 10^-3*10^-3*10^-1*10^-11 = 10^-18
So if S(U.) is the number of stars (with possible planets) in the universe and S(U.) = 10^21, then:
– The average number of stars destroyed by the LHC is
S(0.) = S(U.)/P(0.) = 10^21/P(0.)
In my example estimate on average
10^21/10^-18 = 10^3 =1000 stars (with planets) are destroyed by the LHC.
Something to worry about, and make yourself unpopular in the scientific community?

I agree with everything here except the relevance of the computation of the expectation number of destroyed planets. The expectation value is pretty irrelevant to a probability distribution which has a large atom of probability at 0 and a tiny atom at some very large number.

Gelukkig!
